Even in the era of COVID-19, the opioid crisis stands out as one of this century’s most devastating public health disasters, according to a Stanford-Lancet report published Feb. 2, 2022. According to a recent white house report on March 1, 2022, “Drug overdose deaths have reached a historic high, devastating families and communities”.

A Stanford-Lancet report, published in February 2022, emphasizes the devastating impact of opioid addiction and overdose deaths in the United States and Canada.

Since 1999, over 600,000 people in both countries have died from opioid overdoses, surpassing the mortality rate of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The financial costs of the crisis are estimated to be around $1 trillion

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT):

HBOT has been used in addiction and recovery centers due to its physiological benefits
A study followed 17 adults undergoing medically supervised methadone dose reduction
These patients received 5 daily hyperbaric sessions (90 minutes each at 2.0 ATA)
After Day 1 of HBOT, opioid withdrawal symptoms were reduced by twice as much, on average, compared to the control condition

Oxygen’s Role in Pathological States: Oxygen plays a central role in various pathological and disease conditions. As a result, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has gained significant attention. Researchers aim to understand oxygen’s impact within these states and explore whether additional oxygen can improve underlying pathophysiological processes.

Study on Detoxification and Withdrawal Symptoms: In a specific study, scientists investigated oxygen’s role in detoxification and withdrawal symptoms using a rat model dependent on morphine. They assessed withdrawal symptom scores, biochemical markers, and neurotransmitter levels. Remarkably, HBOT led to a significant reduction in both withdrawal symptoms and weight loss.

Improvements in Key Pathophysiological Markers: Beyond symptom relief, HBOT also positively affected key markers such as dopamine and other neurotransmitters. These improvements collectively support the conclusion that HBOT effectively alleviates withdrawal symptoms induced by morphine dependence.

Application in Addiction Control: Currently, many drug and alcohol centers utilize HBOT for various purposes, including addiction control. This study provides valuable insights into the rationale and potential benefits of HBOT in managing withdrawal symptoms.
