Plastic Surgery and Hyperbarics

Regardless of whether a patient undergoes cosmetic or reconstructive surgery, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) serves as a natural aid in the healing process, potentially reducing recovery time.

Patients undergoing surgery encounter post-operative challenges akin to those in traditional surgery, alongside specific challenges unique to plastic surgery.

HBOT presents an option that could accelerate healing while mitigating the impacts of these challenges. The elevated complication rate associated with such surgeries stems from blood supply disruptions leading to issues like ischemia, necrosis, infection, wound dehiscence, and excessive scarring.

HBOT enhances this process by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels.

Numerous surgeons now advise pre- and/or post-operative HBOT to patients to improve their healing, recovery, and outcomes.

Research: Preconditioning with Hyperbaric Oxygen May Lower Complications After Abdominoplasty: A Retrospective Cohort Stud

A 2019 study investigated the impact of hyperbaric oxygen on wound healing, drawing on its observed positive preconditioning effects in animal models. Patients who underwent preoperative HBOT were compared with those who did not. The study assessed the effectiveness of preoperative HBOT administered prior to abdominoplasty in reducing postoperative complications. “Given the favorable outcomes of preoperative HBOT observed in our study, there is potential for its application to benefit patients undergoing various other surgical procedures. The therapy is deemed safe and well-tolerated, and can be readily administered to most patients.”
