Sports-related injuries pose significant concerns for players, coaches, and parents alike, with inflammation and pain playing crucial roles in the recovery process.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has demonstrated considerable efficacy in reducing inflammation associated with injuries and alleviating pain. Additionally, HBOT can stimulate fibroblast and collagen activity, expediting and improving the healing process following surgeries and wounds.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is extensively utilized by numerous elite athletes to recover from muscle injuries and facilitate full recovery from high-impact traumas. It is integrated into the medical protocols of certain U.S. Olympic Teams for treating sports-related injuries. Emerging evidence underscores HBOT’s effectiveness as an adjunct treatment to mitigate the effects of traumatic brain injuries, commonly seen in football and similar sports.
Research has indicated the following advantages of HBOT for sports-related injuries.

“The most notable utilization of HBOT for recovery from muscular fatigue was observed during the Nagano Winter Olympics, involving seven athletes. Following physical exertion, athletes underwent HBOT sessions lasting 30-40 minutes at 1.3 ATA, with a maximum of six treatments per athlete and an average of two sessions per athlete. Notably, an athlete experiencing abdominal muscle tension and sharp pain was able to compete after HBOT treatment with minimal discomfort. Similarly, another athlete with anterior knee pain received HBOT treatment within 2 days of injury and experienced no difficulty performing thereafter. These cases highlight the efficacy of HBOT in enhancing performance without adverse effects such as muscular pain or nerve paralysis, while also providing conditioning benefits for athletes.”
In 2011, a case report documented the experience of an NFL player who suffered multiple concussions, leading to the development of hydrocephalus necessitating emergency shunt brain surgery. Despite these challenges, the athlete continued playing and even won the Super Bowl, but subsequently required additional emergency surgeries due to shunt failure. Following these surgeries, the player underwent 40 one-hour sessions of HBOT. Subsequent neurocognitive evaluations and SPECT brain imaging conducted by the Amen Clinic in California revealed significant improvements in 5 out of 6 indices on the MicroCog assessment for cognitive functioning, as well as notable enhancements in SPECT imaging.
